Mathematics at Pollington – Balne CE Primary School
Be the Best You Can Be
Mathematics introduces children to concepts, skills and thinking strategies that are essential in everyday life and support learning across the curriculum, gaining them valuable skills for life including but not limited to, financial literacy, scientific analysis, and technological advancements.
Mathematics is a universal language and at Pollington – Balne CE Primary School, children are encouraged to see themselves as mathematicians from the outset and given opportunities to reason and problem solve daily as part of building their mathematical skills, understanding and application.
We provide a high-quality mathematics educational experience as it provides a foundation for understanding the world, the ability to reason mathematically, and promotes an appreciation of the beauty and power of mathematics with a sense of enjoyment and curiosity about the subject.
Within mathematics we promote the Christian Value of perseverance to help develop the growth mindset of children, giving them the confidence to attempt challenges children may have previously felt were out of reach.
The National Curriculum for Mathematics aims to ensure that all pupils:
- become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, including through varied and frequent practice with increasingly complex problems over time, so that pupils develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately.
- reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, conjecturing relationships and generalisations, and developing an argument, justification or proof using mathematical language
- can solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of routine and non-routine problems with increasing sophistication, including breaking down problems into a series of simpler steps and persevering in seeking solutions.
